Summer is fast approaching and with temperatures rising, being aware of how heat impacts you is key. Here are some things to look out for to protect yourself and others around you.
Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are common heat-related conditions. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and fainting. If untreated, it can lead to heat stroke, a severe condition marked by a body temperature above 39.4°. Heat stroke is a medical emergency requiring immediate attention.

Tips for Staying Cool
Stay Hydrated: drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if not thirsty. Avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks.
Dress appropriately: wear lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-coloured clothing. A wide-brimmed hat can provide additional sun protection.
Seek shade and cool environments: avoid direct sunlight, especially during peak hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Stay in air-conditioned buildings if possible.
Limit outdoor activities: schedule strenuous activities for cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening. Take frequent breaks in shaded or cool areas.
Use sunscreen: apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.
Check on vulnerable individuals: monitor young children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses, as they are more susceptible to heat-related issues.
Recognising the Signs of Trouble
If symptoms of heat exhaustion appear, move to a cooler place, drink water, and rest. If the situation worsens, seek medical help. For heat stroke, call emergency services immediately and try to cool the person with water or ice packs.
Heat awareness is essential for preventing heat-related illnesses and staying safe during high temperatures. Follow these tips and be mindful of the risks to enjoy the summer while protecting your health.
