The first residents have moved into their new homes at our recently completed development on Glengall Road, which brings modern and affordable homes to Londoners.
The scheme, built by HG Construction, has delivered 170 homes; 109 for shared ownership, 45 for social rent and 16 for market sale. Some of the homes have also been adapted for wheelchair users.
“I’m delighted that this important development, in an area with such high demand for housing, is now complete. It’s great to see residents moving in and beginning to enjoy their new homes.
Glengall Road forms part of our wider investment in the borough, which includes new developments at New Kent Road, Parkhouse Street and Ilderton Road. Together, these homes will help ensure local people have access to high-quality affordable places to live.”
Residents can make use of a range of on-site facilities designed to support sustainable living, including Brompton bike lockers, communal spaces, a children’s play area, a landscaped garden and rooftop gardens with stunning views across London.
In keeping with the character of the local area, the development retains the original façade on two sides, and the site’s industrial chimney has been woven into the design. These features preserve an important piece of Southwark’s history while creating homes for the future.
The site has a rich local story. It once housed the R White’s Lemonade factory and the Edison Bell radio works. In 1914, Jack Johnson, the first African American world heavyweight boxing champion, recorded a spoken word piece at the Edison Bell works on Glengall Road.
