Residents at Alexandra Park Mansions in Hastings recently gathered to celebrate the installation of new nesting sites for swifts and house martins.
The initiative was made possible during planned roof works at the scheme. Contractor, Colours Decorating, generously funded and installed 30 swift bricks and 36 house martin cups, supporting efforts to boost local bird populations.
As part of the celebration, residents enjoyed a coffee morning, complete with a handmade cake decorated with both bird species.
Ron, a Southern Housing resident, has volunteered to monitor the nest sites and has already recorded numerous bird species in the shared garden.
“I’ve numbered all the boxes and check them each week with my binoculars. Birds these days have fewer places to nest, so it’s great to see this project making a difference. I’ve already recorded 39 different bird species in the garden, and I’m hopeful the new bricks and cups will encourage even more.”
The project supports our Biodiversity Pathway to 2030 and wider Sustainability Strategy and was developed with expert advice from Action for Swifts, House Martin Conservation UK & Ireland, and the Hastings & Rother Swift Conservation Group, who helped identify the best locations for the new homes.
“Swifts are one of 30 priority species we’re focusing on as part of our biodiversity plans, and we’re really pleased to be creating new opportunities for them to nest here. By supporting both swifts and house martins, we’re strengthening the local bird population and encouraging nature to thrive across our communities.”
