Southern Housing recently celebrated a milestone at the Charlton Riverside development, Evelyn House, as the building’s structure reached its highest point.
To mark the milestone, the local housing association held a topping out ceremony on Monday 17th June.
Cllr Jit Ranabhat, Mayor of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, Cllr Anthony Okereke, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich and Cllr Jo van den Broek, Ward Councillor for Charlton Village and Riverside, were an integral part of the day’s event, pouring the final area of cement on the sixth floor of the new building.
The local councillors and other guests also enjoyed a tour of the site, which will deliver 67 much-needed affordable homes and two commercial units to the area.
The development is in partnership with the Mayor of London, the Royal Borough of Greenwich, and award-winning housebuilder The Hill Group, and is due to complete in early 2025.
It will provide seven wheelchair accessible apartments, with six parking bays for disabled use. Sustainable features include electric car charging points, storage for 67 bikes, air source heat pumps supplying residents’ heating, and PV panels producing electricity for communal areas.

Southern Housing’s Chief Executive, Paul Hackett CBE, said: ‘‘Evelyn House helps showcase the vital role housing associations play in building new affordable homes. The homes are a mix of one, two, three and four-bedroom apartments for affordable rent, meaning we’re providing secure, and modern homes to residents in housing need within the borough.
We’re hopeful that with housing as such an important issue leading into the general election, housing associations such as Southern Housing will be recognised, and fully supported, as part of the solution to the current housing crisis facing the country”.
Simon Trice, Managing Director at The Hill Group comments: “The topping out ceremony at Evelyn House marks a significant milestone in the development, bringing us closer to providing much-needed sustainable, affordable homes for the local community. We are proud to be delivering these new homes in partnership with Southern Housing, the Mayor of London, and the Royal Borough of Greenwich.”
