Residents at Ryde Village on the Isle of Wight can go wild in the aisles, thanks to a new on-site shop.

Aiming to support independence and promote choice for residents, the team at the extra care scheme have introduced a supermarket style shop, where residents can pick up their essentials, without needing to leave the scheme.

Opening the shop was a direct result of resident feedback, they also shared their opinions on the sort of items they’d like to see on the shelves.

As some residents find it difficult to get out and about, the shop is on wheels, so can go fully mobile! Staff can wheel it to the communal lounge, dining room and residents’ flats – who needs Deliveroo?

Speaking of the shop, residents said: “The shop is marvellous, you can get bread, toothpaste, fruit and even the odd treat, such as sweets, crisps and fizzy drinks!

“The new manager Sam has really made a difference here; she puts the residents at the heart of the service and is always looking for ways to increase choice and promote wellbeing.”

Denise Camara, Activity Co-ordinator at the scheme, added: “It’s really important to promote independence like this, and support residents to make their own choices with simple everyday tasks, such as shopping.”

The introduction of the shop is a great example of how we listen to residents’ views and ensure our service is accessible to all.
