At Southern Housing we’re committed to helping achieve a greener future for our communities. Our Biodiversity Pathway sets out how we’re protecting our homes and green spaces and the health and wellbeing of our residents and staff.
Resident Sustainability Champion, Luda, shares how we can be green this summer and all do our bit for the planet.
“Looking after the green spaces in our community by taking small steps such as taking your rubbish home with you can make a huge difference. Not only does litter look horrible and hurt wildlife, but the rubbish collected from public spaces is often burned in incinerators, with the resulting smoke, smell, and collection costs negatively affect people living nearby.
Participating in local initiatives to make communal spaces cleaner and greener can reduce resident isolation and bring local communities together. Southern Housing helps support community events all over the country, including Bob Fowler allotments in Kent and Northbourne clean up day – keep an eye out for chances to get involved in your area.
As well as this, thinking about our journeys this summer also helps. Taking advantage of the sunshine and travelling on foot where possible helps reduce carbon, or taking train journeys or cycling to your destination. Bikes are a healthy environmental way to travel, which is why Southern Housing aims to install bikes sheds whenever possible in their new build homes.
