With Christmas around the corner, many of us look forward to our Christmas cooking. But, whether you’re a turkey with all the trimmings family, or a veggie alternative, these celebrations come with a surprising amount of food waste.
From loading up our Christmas dinner plates to those forgotten fridge finds; it takes a toll on both our wallets and the planet.
So, this year, why not embrace a more sustainable approach to your Christmas feast? Our Resident Sustainability Champions have shared their tips and recipes that celebrate flavour, reduce waste, and make your Christmas table kinder to the environment.
Paul from Berkshire
- Buy food that you know will be eaten or can be frozen once cooked
- My partner is a vegetarian, so we always have meat free options and lots of vegetables that can become a veggie stew or bubble and squeak to limit food waste.
Barbara from London
- Joining local groups that share foods at church or farmer’s markets helps my appetite and helps me cut down waste. Getting involved with local celebrations reduces creating singular waste.
Bruce from Mitcham
- Donate any in date and unused food to local foodbanks that often need donations.
Ivy from Streatham
- Create a Christmas budget for food shopping and stick to it. Use leftover food, such as turkey or chicken, in pies, soup or stew – or even sandwiches for the next few days.
Jacqueline from Isle of Wight
- After Halloween, buy the leftover pumpkins at a fraction of the cost. They store for up to three months in a cool dry place. Pumpkin soup, pumpkin pastries with a hint of cinnamon and a little brown sugar - yum!
Luda from Islington
- If you’re hosting Christmas, plan! Decide your Christmas menu early in December and make a list of guests to know how much food you need.
Celebrating Christmas sustainably doesn’t mean sacrificing tradition, it means making thoughtful choices that benefit both your home and the planet. So, whether you're hosting a crowd or cooking for a quiet Christmas at home, these tips will help you make the most of every bite, while keeping your celebrations deliciously eco-friendly.
